Atlantic City Fire Destroys Offices of Casino Commission

On June 24, 2007, a fire that started on the Atlantic City boardwalk destroyed some parts of the state Casino Control Commission offices but the gaming operations in the city should not be affected in any way, according to a Commission spokesman.

Spokesman Daniel Heneghan said that they have a disaster-recovery plan regarding this matter. This event will not affect the operation of the gambling casinos in any way. They have an inspector assigned to each casino in the area on a daily basis.

The inspectors do not have to report to the Casino Control Commission on a daily basis, but rather to the casinos that they are assigned to. Casino Control Commission officials said that there were no serious injuries in the incident.

The fire on Atlantic City's boardwalk was confined between Ocean Avenue and South Carolina, destroying several establishments on the block.

But it also reached where the Casino Control Commission's offices are located. Heneghan commented that the Casino Control Commission's offices will be closed on Monday while the investigation of the cause of the fire continues.

Heneghan said that the commission office has some smoke damage and several windows were destroyed in the office of Casino Commissioner, William T. Sommeling, as well as the windows in Commissioner Mike Fedorko's office. Heneghan said that they want to make sure that everything is okay before reopening the commission's office.
