Caesars Casino Employee Files Case Against Casino Regarding Secondhand Smoke Issue

Around the US there are a growing number of individuals who do not want to work in an environment filled with secondhand smoke. Although some believe that these casino employees should find work elsewhere, the employees are supported by unions and want immediate action to resolve the issue.

A former Caesars Palace casino employee is suing the gaming facility, claiming that the casino did not do anything to protect their employees from the hazards of secondhand smoke. It has been discovered by the Surgeon General of the United States that secondhand smoke can be harmful to the health of a person. Jay Edelson, the lawyer who filed the case on behalf of Tomo Stevens, said on July 24th, 2009 that the point of this case is not ban smoking in gaming facilities.

The real goal is to change what the casinos are doing and persuade them to create some nonsmoking areas within casino facilities where staff can go in and out. What many of these casino employees are troubled with is not the secondhand smoke itself but the way casino facilities manages the smoke. Casinos in the Las Vegas strip may have been law in placing ventilation systems that can handle the amount of smoke that is present inside their gaming facilities on an everyday basis.

A study conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health that was concluded in May, claimed that casino employees at not only in Caesars, but also in Bally's casino and Paris Las Vegas, had chemicals in their urine that was from inhaling secondhand smoke. The chemicals were evaluated as unhealthy by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health study.

Individual states have stepped in to try solve their secondhand smoke issue. Laws have been made banning smoking in public areas and the public has responded positively to the bans. Although the first reaction is fear, once the smoking ban is in place figures show that the business returns to their usual levels.
