Cal Neva Casino Ordered to Fix Faulty Fire Alarm System
On December 9th, 2007, a casino in the north of Lake Tahoe which was once owned by singer Frank Sinatra was threatened to be shut down by authorities unless they fix their fire alarm system. The Cal Neva Lodge and Casino's system may or may not inform occupants of a fire because of its unreliable design, according to Fire Marshal Tom Smith of the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District. Smith commented that he asked the resort occupying the California to fix the fire alarm system in August and followed up by writing a letter last month after the casino failed to correct the problem.
John Harounian, the associate asset manager with the Cal Neva's owners, commented that they are planning to follow the order. Smith commented he had planned to put a sing on the front doors of Cal Neva, warning that a close down was on the way if the officials will ignore the warning. He was notified by the management that they were in the process of fixing the system.
The chief of enforcement with the Nevada Gaming Commission, Jeff Markling commented that his agency has notified the Cal Neva casino about the situation. When it was managed by Frank Sinatra from 1960 to 1963, the Cal Neva attracted Hollywood Stars like Marilyn Monroe, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. The gambling license of Cal Neva was removed by the Nevada Gaming Control Board after mobster Sam Giancana went to the resort.
