On July 30th, 2008, rising as a massive building in a former cornfield located east of Battle Creek, the FireKeepers Casino is being constructed in a steady manner. Construction started on the $300 million, 236,000 square foot casino facility on May 7th, 2008 and is scheduled to be completed next year. Located in the township of Emmett Township, which is five miles east of Battle Creek at exit 104 of Interstate 94, the entertainment location will become the 2nd casino facility to debut in southwestern Michigan, behind the Four Winds Casino facility, which debut last August 27th, 2007 in New Buffalo.

Donna Halinski, the spokesperson for the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Pottawatomi Indians, which owns the establishment, said that they are on schedule for the summer 2009 opening. The Clark Construction Co. from Lansing is managing the project. About ten percent of the project has already been completed at the seventy-nine acre and steel structure of the casino is scheduled to be finished by September. The concrete foundation and utility infrastructure have been put in place and about one thousand two hundred tons of steel has been put in place.

The amenities that the casino will feature include a seventy seat gourmet eating establishment, a three hundred seat buffet area, a one hundred fifty seat, twenty-four hour coffee shop and a sports bar and cabaret area. Players will be able to enjoy the 2,500 slot machines, ninety card table games and a twenty-table poker room. Officials of the tribe commented that the establishment will be a good development for the economy.

Around 1,500 jobs will be created because of the casino. Job fairs and recruitment are scheduled on January 2009. The casino establishment expects to attract around 3.8 million visitors annually from all over the state and produces around $100 million yearly. Customers will be required to be at least twenty-one years old to enter the casino.
