Grenada Officials Deny Giving License to Casino

On January 4th, 2008, the government of Grenada will talk with Church and Business Leaders and other affected organizations before deciding on whether or not to approve a proposal that will open a casino facility on the island.

Prime Minister Keith Mitchell vehemently denied in his yearly New Year message to the nation that his government already approved a license for the developer of the casino. The developer plans to construct the casino at a cruise ship dock and shopping district in the capital. Mitchell clarified the government's positions amidst the rumors that are surrounding the issue.

Mitchell added that any decision that they will make will be only made with the consent of the affected parties in Grenada. The Chief Executive Officer of the gambling development firm Zublin Grenada commented that should the government of Grenada decided to allow the casino, it will make the country more lucrative for investment.

But church officials and other organizations said that they do not want gaming to be legalized in their country seeing as how online casinos are already seen as such. Rev. Stanford Simon from St. George's Baptist Church commented that they do not want the residents to be in danger of being addicted to gaming.
