Rhode Island Lawmakers Contemplates the Possibility of Casino Table Games Expansion

The House Financial Committees around the United States have been very busy in the past few weeks dealing with the issue of casino gaming. The House Finance Committee of Rhode Island became the latest committee to discuss the idea of casino expansion in a hearing on May 20th, 2010.

As is the case with other gambling plans, the main point to adding casino games to existing slot machine casino facilities was additional revenue. Rhode Island will earn millions of dollars in tax revenue if the additional casino table games are approved by state officials.

Casino facilities in Rhode Island are currently facing a big financial difficulty. Twin River's proprietors have filed for bankruptcy protection. The casino's owners believe that without the casino games, Rhode Island could lost not only additional profit but existing gaming profit as well.

Twin River spokeswoman Patti Doyle said that the three hundred million dollars in yearly revenue to Rhode Island would be placed in danger if they will not be able to move forward with expanded casino gambling. Twin River put the pressure on state lawmakers at the committee hearing on Thursday, reiterating Doyle's point of view several times.

George Papanier, Twin River's President and COO, said that the gaming expansion was needed to help Twin River compete with gaming facilities in nearby states like Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The state of Connecticut has two casino resorts that feature full-scale gaming and Massachusetts legislators are in the process of creating laws for gaming expansion. Pennsylvania legislators approved casino table games in early January 2010 for their state casinos.
