Rivers Casino Pays $2.5 Million For Pittsburgh Penguins New Stadium

The Rivers Casino facility made its initial payment to the Pittsburgh Sports and Exhibition Authority on October 9th, 2009 as part of an original deal to help finance the new Consol Energy Center, the facility now under construction to become the new base of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Greg Carlin, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rivers Casino, said that the group wired $2.3 million to the Sports and Exhibition Authority, a part of the total $7.5 million the casino group expects to pay annually for the next thirty years.

Carlin said that he thinks that there was some concern by some individuals that they have to make these payments. He said that they want to make the payment to show that they are serious in honoring their obligation.

Carlin added that the casino facility continues to negotiate with the Sports and Exhibition Authority over different details of the arrangement and expects to reach a full deal in the near future. The payment of the Rivers Casino came a day after the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board filed a complaint against the casino facility for lack of Payment.

The Rivers Casino opened on the North Shore in August 2009 after a delay caused by financial difficulties by then-owner Don Barden, who later sold majority of the project to the current owner. The brand new $325 million -plus is expected to open for the beginning of the Pittsburgh Penguins' 2010-2011 season.
