St. Regis Tribe Files Case Against Secretary Kempthorne
On November 1st, 2007, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne has blocked long enough the casino plans of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and the tribe now filed a case against him to force him to make a final decision.
The main issue in the problem is that the St. Regis Mohawk tribe wants to put 30 acres of land for their proposed casino facility in Catskills, but they have passed an application about nine months ago and still have any received any sort of confirmation or any development at the moment.
St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Head Lorraine White commented that it is disheartening that they need to file a lawsuit in order to force Secretary Kempthorne to reach a decision but it is unacceptable that their completed casino application has been in Secretary Kempthorne's department for nine months without any development at all.
Dirk Kempthorne is known to be against constructing any casinos off of Indian tribal reservations and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe believes that the personal feelings of Secretary Kempthorne is what keeping him from making an appropriate decision on the matter.
The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is waiting for their application and cannot do anything with their casino plans until the approval of their plan. The tribe is planning to construct a casino facility in Monticello worth $600 million and would offer twenty-four poker tables, eating establishments, 3,500 slot machines and 125 casino table games.
