Steelers and Pirates Appeal Casino Master Plan to State Supreme Court

On June 28, 2007, Football team Pittsburgh Steelers and Baseball team Pirates filed their appeals before the state Supreme Court over the North Shore Casino by Don Barden, a businessman from Detroit.

The Carnegie Science Center appears to have been negotiating a temporary agreement to avoid appealing the case to the state Supreme Court. Pittsburgh Steelers President, Art Rooney II, commented that the team believes that the city Planning Commission made a "vital error" regarding their decision to approve the master development made for the Majestic Star Casino.

Rooney said that their first order of business is to protect the interest of their fans to the Heinz Field. The master plan for the Majestic Star Casino that was approved by the city Planning Commission are not enough for the requirements that are needed for the City Ordinance, which requires that a Master Plan should show that the casino will ensure the preservation of the environment and traffic related measures.

They firmly believe that these issues were not met by the master plan of the Majestic Star Casino. The development plan of the Majestic Star Casino also failed to satisfy the requirements of the zoning code, which requires the gambling casino to address the traffic problem that it will cause in the area, according to Pirates CEO Kevin McClatchy.

McClatchy said that after working with different organizations in public meeting, they have yet to achieve good and acceptable solutions. According to casino company spokesman, Bob Oltmanns, the officials of the Majestic Star Casino quietly met with the officials of the Carnegie Science Center.

The spokesperson of the Allegheny County, Kevin Evanto, said that the 2 parties have reached a tentative agreement regarding these issues. Both the Steelers and the Pirates have raised worries about potential traffic problems, especially during game days.

The Planning Commission then required the Majestic Star Casino to complete a traffic study by September 30, 2007. Traffic analysts for both teams have been involved in the study. Both Rooney and McClatchy said that they will both continue to work with the city and the Allegheny County to resolve the issue.
