Authorities Discovers Illegal Activity in Atlantic City
On November 14th, 2007, the game of baccarat, roulette and even Hee Haw slot machines are all legal options to enjoy in Atlantic City casinos. But another popular version for wagering betting on big sports is prohibited. Authorities said that it was a market niche that criminal organizations were only too happy to answer.
About 23 male suspects including four said to have connections to criminal organizations and six staff of the city casinos where charged with operating an illegal sports betting ring out of a poker room at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa. Authorities said that the illegal sports betting ring received a total of $22 million since March 2006.
New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram said that the criminals in the area probably did not expect that they will keep a vigilant eye for any suspicious activities. The suspects were immediately taken into custody that day. The bail was set at $100,000 for Micali and $50,000 for the others. Wishnick was taken into at the Atlantic County Jail. It was not yet clear whether the other suspects had placed bail or were still waiting to be processed from prison.
The Office of the state Attorney General commented that lawyers for any of the twenty-three suspects had not yet come forward with any request. The authorities said that Borgata cooperated with the investigation and even gave permission for the investigators to use their casino surveillance video.
The spokesperson for the Borgata casino Rob Stillwell said that they have immediately assisted with the investigation after being informed on what is going on. Stillwell said that the arrested employees would lose their jobs as well as their casino license.
An employee from the Tropicana Casino and Resort was also arrested. Stillwell commented that the legitimate gaming operations of the casino, which is a subsidiary of Boyd Gaming Corporation and MGM Mirage, were never compromised by the incident.
